Why an EU licence

Who needs an EU drone licence

A national licence from a country outside the EU is valid only in that country. When work takes you to an EU country, you need an EU drone licence. That applies whether you clean facades and solar panels, carry out inspections or film for a client in Vienna or Munich.

A licence on its own does not bring you work. It is what you need to fly a drone heavier than 250 g there. Work comes from knowledge and experience.

Our drone training centre in Zuce, Belgrade, also has a practice area for drone cleaning, with a facade wall and solar panels. You can take the EU licence exam online or in the classroom at the same centre. More than 1,000 trainees have completed training with us.

During field training

Three licences

What A1/A3, A2 and STS each cover

All three follow the same European rules. With us they come in order, and each one builds on the one before.

Start here

Step one

EU A1/A3 drone licence

You need it for a drone heavier than 250 g.

  • Flights up to 120 m, with the drone always in visual line of sight.
  • A1: class C0 and C1 drones, up to 900 g. Close to people, but never over crowds.
  • A3: drones up to 25 kg, far from people and at least 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial and recreational areas.
  • Online exam with 40 questions.

Step two

EU A2 drone licence

Flying closer to people.

  • Class C2 drone, up to 4 kg.
  • At least 30 m from people, or 5 m in low-speed mode. No flying over people.
  • EU A1/A3 is required first. Before the exam you practise flying on your own and sign a declaration that you have done so.
  • Exam with 30 questions.

Step three

STS drone certificate

Theory and exam for the standard scenarios, building on A2.

  • The scenarios cover flights in visual line of sight, including in populated areas, and flights beyond visual line of sight in sparsely populated areas.
  • About 20 hours of online theory, with 90 days of access.
  • With us it comes after A2, so the exam has 30 questions.
  • To actually fly, you also need practical training, a class C5 or C6 drone and an operator declaration that the flight follows the scenario. Practical training is not part of our programme.

Step by step

How to take the EU drone licence exams with us

  1. Get in touch

Call +381 63 8280 270 or fill in the application form and tell us what you already have.

  2. We choose your programme

If you already have EU A1/A3, you only take A2. If you do not have EU A1/A3, or only have a national licence from a country outside the EU, you start with EU A1/A3 or with the combined EU A1/A3 and A2 programme. STS comes after A2.

  3. Account and theory

We set up an account for you with your email address, in our classroom if you prefer, and follow your progress. You go through the theory online, in English, at your own pace. We run the A2 preparation in English or Serbian. For A2, before the exam you practise flying on your own and sign a declaration that you have done so.

  4. Take the exam

You take the exam online, from home or in our classroom, when you are ready. Your ID is checked and a camera monitors the whole exam. You sit it on your own.

  5. Get your certificate

Once you pass, you request your certificate and it arrives by email. It is valid for 5 years.

An EU drone licence and a non-EU licence are not the same

Before each job, check which licence the country where you fly requires.

Only in that country

Licence from a non-EU country

A national licence, valid only in that country.

Rules and exams differ from one country to another.

Which licence you need at home depends on that country’s rules.

Valid in Europe

Take it with us

EU drone licence

Valid for 5 years across the EU, as well as in Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

You take the A1/A3, A2 and STS exams online or with us, under camera supervision.

A national licence from a country outside the EU does not count as EU A1/A3.

EU drone licence, frequently asked questions

  • Is the EU licence valid outside Europe?

No. It is valid in 31 European countries, across the whole EU, as well as in Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. To fly anywhere else, you follow the rules of that country.

  • I have a licence from a country outside the EU

A national licence from a country outside the EU is valid only in that country and does not count as an EU licence. For EU A2 you first need EU A1/A3, so you take the combined EU A1/A3 and A2 programme.

  • What language is the exam in?

English. The theory is online in English, and we run the A2 preparation in English or Serbian.

  • Where do I take the exam?

Wherever suits you: online from home, or with us in our classroom in Zuce, Belgrade, near Mount Avala and the motorway to Niš. Either way, the exam is online, with an ID check and camera supervision.

  • Can I fly over people with A2?

No. A2 lets you fly closer to people, at least 30 m from them, or 5 m in low-speed mode. And only with a class C2 drone.

  • Does STS let me fly beyond visual line of sight?

No, the exam alone does not. With us, STS means the theory and the exam. To fly beyond visual line of sight you also need practical training, a class C6 drone and an operator declaration that the flight follows the scenario.

  • How much does it cost?

It depends on what you already have and which licences you are taking. Call +381 63 8280 270 and we will tell you exactly.

Partner

Drone Class, our partner for EU licences

Drone Class is a Dutch company that creates programmes for EU drone pilot licences. It was founded in 2018 in Duiven. Pilots from all over the world, not only from the EU, get their licences through dronelicense.eu. According to their figures, more than 75,000 pilots have gone through their licence programmes.

We work with them on the EU A1/A3, A2 and STS programme. They bring the programme and their experience, and we bring the preparation in English or Serbian and training at our drone training centre in Belgrade.
